Dire Consequences
The "California Healthy Pets Act", AB1634' is a disaster for California pets and their owners. Under AB 1634 virtually all pet dogs and cats will have to be sterilized by the time they are four months old. AB 1634 will not decrease shelter populations or euthanasia rates in California. Within a generation, only licensed breeders of purebred animals will own unsterilized dogs and cats. Responsible amateur breeders will no longer exist. Service and police dogs will no longer be bred or trained in California.

Alert

AB 1634 was approved by the Assembly Business & Professions Committee on April 24, 2007 on a straight party-line vote with all seven Democrats on the committee approving the bill. On May 16, 2007 the Assembly Appropriations Committee approved the bill and sent it to the full Assembly for consideration. Read AB 1634 as updated May 9, 2007. Please send Opposition Letters to every member of the California Assembly. If you represent a Club or Organization, or are a Veterinarian, please send another letter on your letterhead. We will soon post sample letters of opposition.

PetPAC is a Political Action Committee established specifically to fight bad animal legislation like AB 1634. It represents a broad constituency - dogs & cats, show and working animals, service and police dogs, mutts and feral cats, any animals and their owners targeted by onerous animal rights laws. PetPAC is new but its founders are experienced at fighting these battles. Please support PetPAC with your contributions of time and money. See the web site at http://www.petpac.net

Many working veterinarians are not even aware of AB 1634. When they learn about AB 1634 many vets oppose it and know nothing about CVMA's endorsement of it. You should contact your personal vets and make sure they are aware of AB 1634 and ask them to oppose it. Ask your vet to write opposition letters to lawmakers and CVMA.
Dog & Cat Owners Say No to AB 1634

What's Wrong With AB 1634?

AB 1634 Doesn't Solve a Real Problem
The proponents have their facts wrong. They claim that California has a growing problem with abandoned pets resulting in over 1,000,000 animals being surrendered to shelters and 500,000 euthanized annually at a cost to California taxpayers of $250 million. In fact, that is simply not true. The number of incoming dogs and cats at California shelters has been decreasing for many years, as has the number of animals euthanized. Most animals surrendered to shelters are either feral cats or other dogs & cats who are too old, too sick or who have behavioral problems that make them unsuitable for adoption. Thus, they have to be euthanized. In fact, California shelters have such a shortage of adoptable dogs that they import dogs from out-of-state to fill the demand. The proponents' arguments for this bill don't stand up to a test of the facts. Shelters will not save money from the passage of AB 1634 because the numbers and types of animals they receive and euthanize will not be affected by such a law. This proposal is a smokescreen to eliminate the breeding and ownership of quality pets in California.

Mandatory Spay Neuter Doesn't Work
Where it has been tried, MSN has been a failure. MSN has resulted in reduced licensing compliance and, therefore, reduced revenue for shelters. Reduced licensing compliance has resulted in fewer rabies vaccinations (a primary purpose of pet licensing is to assure that mandatory rabies vaccinations take place) thereby endangering the public's health. Public fear of the penalties associated with MSN have led to increased dumping of unwanted pets and reduced adoption of unowned, stray animals. Most jurisdictions have rescinded their MSN laws.

AB 1634 is Bad Health Policy for Animals
The proposal requires spay/neuter of pets by the time they reach four months of age. Sterilizing that early is dangerous for many animals and is extremely poor health policy for most. The decision whether to neuter a pet, or when, should be made on a case-by-case basis, not arbitrarily because an animal reaches a certain, very young age. Such decisions should be made by responsible owners with the advice of their veterinarians, not by politicians.

There are many reasons not to sterilize an animal too early including: orthopedic risks, increased risk of cancer, adverse behavioral consequences, incomplete development and other health risks. There has been much research of this subject and many in the veterinary community is concerned about too early sterilization. See this article for additional information and for many scientific references.

Many "Breeds" Will Disappear, (like my Chiahuahua/Minature Pinscher)
Many working dogs, and rare breeds of dogs and cats, are not "registered" with any registry. Even as purebreds, they could not be exempt from AB 1634 and, as a result of mandatory sterilization, their lines would die out in California. Even if they could be registered as purebreds, most working or service dogs would not be exempt because they do not "compete" nor are they "being trained" before they are 4 months old. They would, therefore, fail any tests for an exemption and would have to be sterilized. Most future working and service dogs would have to come from out-of-state as certified trained adults. Californians would no longer be able own and train such animals as puppies. Here's why the bill will eliminate working dogs.

Responsible Breeders will Disappear
Most purebred dogs and cats in California are raised by hobby breeders who have occasional litters in their homes. The requirements for a breeder exemption are so harsh most California hobby breeders could not comply. They do not qualify for a business license in most jurisdictions and, therefore, could not receive an exemption. Without this large pool of responsible breeders Californians will have to rely on corporate or out-of-state breeders as their only source of purebred pets.

AB 1634 Will Cost Californians a Fortune
Shelter populations, rather than decreasing, will increase as fewer citizens are willing to take in stray animals resulting in significant increased costs for animal shelters throughout the state. In order to assure compliance with AB 1634's complex requirements every local jurisdiction in California will have to increase its enforcement staff. Enforcement costs alone could add $50-100 million to already overburdened local governments. Public health costs will increase as rabies vaccination compliance drops and as ever poorer quality pets are imported from out-of-state (see what U.S. Customs has to say). Police officers and the public will be at greater risk if there are no more police dogs.

AB 1634 provides a limited exemption for non-residents visiting the state. Many out-of-state residents will not risk confiscation of their show animal. As a result tourism will suffer and dog and cat shows will cease to exist in California. Currently there are thousands of cat and dog shows held in California every year. Millions of dollars are spent at these events for entry fees, hotels, meals and supplies. Vendors who sell millions of dollars worth of goods at these shows will lose their livelihood and the state will lose the sales tax.

Reputable California Breeders Are Not the Problem
Hobbyist breeders of dogs and cats will become extinct with AB 1634. Such breeders of purebred animals have limited resources and only breed occasionally. They stay involved in their offspring forever. Disreputable breeders don't care about laws and will continue in spite of AB 1634. Only the good guys will be hurt and the bad guys will produce just as many "throwaway pets" as ever. Reputable breeders adhere to a Code of Ethics that requires that their “pet” offspring be neutered as a condition of sale and that their “show” offspring be actively shown or neutered. These same breeders remain responsible for ANY offspring they sell should the purchaser no longer want an animal or if an animal is not being properly raised. Their puppies and kittens DO NOT become part of the abandoned animal population. Such breeders should not need expensive special licensing that will drive most out of business and raise the costs for any who remain. This is supported by actual shelter statistics from San Jose where purebred dogs make up 46% of the dog population but only 25% of the shelter intakes. Since 100% of healthy purebred dogs are adopted from shelters, they actual become a profit center for many shelters. If AB 1634 passes, most purebred dogs and cats will come from out-of-state and such out-of-state breeders will have limited contact with and, therefore, limited ability to "rescue" their offspring. That entire task will fall to our shelters increasing their burden, not lessening it.

Current Laws Are Adequate
A new state law is not necessary. Nearly every local jurisdiction in California currently has a dog licensing requirement. Shelters are required by existing state laws to charge a larger licensing fee for intact animals than for neutered animals. And, they are required to sterilize every animal before it can be adopted from their shelters. This system works very well to monitor the reproductive status of the registered dog population. The problem is compliance. Law abiding citizens already comply with existing laws, including licensing their pets. Scofflaws do not comply with existing laws and will not comply with this new proposal. Enforcement of existing laws would largely eliminate any perceived problems with pet overpopulation.

AB 1634's Exceptions Will Not Work for Show Animals
As amended, AB 1634 requires show animals not owned by breeders to meet unrealistic criteria for exemption. AKC requires show dogs be over 2 years old to obtain all of their mandatory health clearances. For that and other reasons, many are not shown until after they are two years old. AB 1634 requires animals to be shown at least once in its first two years. To qualify for any exemption, the animal's breed must be included in some, as yet to be specified, "registry." There is an exemption to allow out-of-state residents to enter California with animals they own. However, non-owner custodians of those same animals will not be exempt if they are in California without their owners, for example if they are a show dog in the care of his California-resident handler. Ask your legislators to be sure they understand the way dog and cat shows actually work and read the language of the proposal carefully before voting.

The Authors' of AB 1634 Don't Understand
The authors' of AB 1634 labor under the fallacy that the competitive show ring is what determines whether a cat or dog is worthy of breeding. That is simply not true. Many breeders choose not to show an animal until it is mature. In slow maturing breeds that may not happen until the animal is 3 or 4 years old. Working farm dogs are important to our agricultural industry, but they never compete. Other animals who have great genetics and strong breeding potential may never get to compete due to career ending injuries that disqualify them from competing but do not negatively impact the benefits they can contribute to their breed. None of these animals could qualify for an AB 1634 "intact permit" and their superior genetics would be lost forever.

this was forwarded to me via one of the dog park listserves I'm on locally:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This week I had the first case in history of raisin toxicity ever seen
at MedVet.

My patient was a 56-pound, 5 yr old male neutered lab mix who ate half a
canister of raisins sometime between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM on Tuesday. He started with vomiting, diarrhea and shaking about 1AM on Wednesday but the owner didn't call my emergency service until 7AM .
I had heard somewhere about raisins AND grapes causing acute Renal
failure but hadn't seen any formal paper on the subject. We had her
bring the dog in immediately. In the meantime, I called the ER service
at MedVet, and the doctor there was like me - had heard something about
it, but....
Anyway, we contacted the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center and they said to give I V fluids at 1 =BD times maintenance and watch the kidney values for the next 48-72 hours. The dog's BUN (blood urea nitrogen level) was already at 32 (normal less than 27) and creatinine over 5 ( 1.9 is the high end of normal). Both are monitors of kidney function in the bloodstream. We placed an IV catheter and started the fluids. Rechecked the renal values at 5 PM and the BUN was over 40 and creatinine over 7 with no urine production after a liter of fluids. At the point I felt the dog was in acute renal failure and sent him on to MedVet for a urinary catheter to monitor urine output overnight as well as overnight care.

He started vomiting again overnight at MedVet and his renal values have
continued to increase daily. He produced urine when given lasix as a
diuretic. He was on 3 different anti-vomiting medications and they still
couldn't control his vomiting. Today his urine output decreased again,
his BUN was over 120, his creatinine was at 10, his phosphorus was very
elevated and his blood pressure, which had been staying around 150,
skyrocketed to 220. He continued to vomit and the owners elected to
euthanize.

This is a very sad case - great dog, great owners who had no idea
raisins could be a toxin. Please alert everyone you know who has a dog
of this very serious risk. Poison control said as few as 7 raisins or
grapes could be toxic. Many people I know give their dogs grapes or raisins as treats including our ex-handler's. Any exposure should give rise to immediate concern.

Here's the deal.....Elvis and Shorty have been fighting lately. not just playful rough housing. I know the difference. This is I want to hurt you fighting. I have a feeling it is over me but, I am not positive. It seems to me that it is Elvis starting the fights. The last fight they got into was in the back of our truck on the way to the dog park. When they should have been happy to be going and they must have just gotten over excited and I don't know who started it. Well it was while we were driving and we couldn't get stopped and pulled over before Elvis got hurt. I know it sounds kind of harsh but, I was hoping that since he was put down by Shorty, who is the Elder male, he would have learned his lesson but now there is just this TENSION between them. Shorty growls whenever Elvis gets too close and Elvis' hair goes up on his back and he stares and stands real still.

I have tried putting them both on their backs and being over them, holding them down until they calm down but it hasn't seemed to do anything, at least with Elvis. Shorty listens really well and only seems to be defending himself but he does start the growling. I have bought a shock collar for Elvis but I haven't started using it because I haven't had a circumstance to spend a few days in a row working with him with it on. I know the key to those is consistancy or they don't work to correct the behavior.

I was hoping maybe some of you would have some suggestions. I am open to pretty much anything besides giving one of them up. That isn't an option.
I hope to get some feedback.

Hello fellow Mutt Lovers.
Ever wonder HOW some Dogs survive traumatic life experiences? heres Our Story.
I live with my Best Buddy Ron ("Puckerbutt" here on TRIBE) and collectively we have three large breed "Mutts"(Beautiful mixed breed Dogs) Two "Rottie-something" Mixes -110 lbs(5 yrs old) and 94 lbs(2 yrs old) and the "Grande Dame" of our pack,a 12 yr old 64 lb "german shepherd-something" Mix.
Back in July Of 2002 when we only had the "Big Guy" 110 lb "Humper"(he was just a yr old then) Ron was driving a secondary road here in WA State,in his Toyota Mini Pickup(with an aluminum Cap on it) and Humper was sitting next to him on the trucks bench seat. A huge 30 ft Motorhome came around a curve and went over the yellow line directly into Rons side of the narrow road! Ron swerved sharply to the RIGHT(to curbside) to avoid a head-on collision with the Behemoth in his path..unfortunatly he hit a soft shoulder and his Pickup truck bounced and flipped over TWICE coming to rest on its roof!( he was traveling the speed limit of 50MPH). Ron survived it! banged up and bleeding,he crawled out of the smashed drivers-side cab window, but ...where WAS Humper? Ron called for him,and found him in a drainage ditch about 60 feet away from the flipped over truck,Humpers nose was bleeding, and there were a few cuts on his face, but he got up and followed Ron up to the street, where they walked to a nearby house to call for help. Humper had NO injuries except for a banged up nose(muzzle) and some cuts to his face...miraculously they BOTH "walked away from that crash"!( a later Vet check found no other injuries to the Dog).
The truck was "flattened" It impacted with the ground(initially) on the right side cab roof(where Humper was SITTING!),"flattening It"..only Ron's side of the cab roof had not been crushed flat! If Humper had been in the back bed under the aluminum cap he'd have been crushed as IT also was "100% Flattened"( I saw the wreck after the crash!), We surmise that in the initial first tumble over,Humper got thrown from the truck, either out the passenger cab window,or out the front of the truck through the windshield, sustaining the injuries(cuts.brusies) to his muzzle and face. If this dog hadnt been "thrown out" of the truck at some point,he would not still be with us today!
I'd like to hear from Members if they have an Amazing Dog Survival Story?

and the truck had no airbags,he was just strapped in with the standard shoulder-lap belt.

She's good to him, just not athletic enough to take him for hikes (but they do go to the park). Anyway, I feel really terrible, because when we sit in the living room of an evening, he chooses my feet to lay beside now, instead of hers. Without being mean to the dog, what can I do to make him sit at her feet again?

I know I’ve listed this before but the situation is becoming critical. I need a new foster family or an adoption family for Layla (Description below). I’m more allergic to Layla than I am most dogs and the job I am working at (Resident Manager) is becoming increasingly stressful and driving a wedge between my boyfriend & I. We’ve been looking for an apt that will accept Layla but e have had no luck. If I give her back to the agency she will have to go to a shelters and I’m horribly afraid that she won’t be adopted in time.

She’s is a super loving dog and doesn’t have an once of meanness in her… ok except for possums… or she was trying to play and got a little rough?

I’ve only heard her bark twice since we had her. The first time we left her alone in the patio and when the possum was near by. Other than those two times she never barks. Layla is up to date with routine shots, already house trained

Layla is the smartest dog I have ever taken care of. She truly understands in some way what we’re saying to her or what we want her to do and is can be completely content outside, inside, inside an office, walking or running next to you.

She listens to commands pretty well and is completely housebroken. She could use a little more training when it comes to walking her. She wants to run and I can’t run.

She sits and lays down when told to and doesn’t run off where she knows she is not suppose to be.

Everyone who has come across Layla is surprised at how loving and how smart she is. She’s great with new people and we’ve been working on stopping her from jumping on people she meets for the first time. She almost never jumps on new people. However it’s the 2nd, 3rd and continued meetings we need to work on. I guess she figures after she meets them than it’s ok to jump up on them. We’re working on this.

If you have photos of yourselves dressed up for a holiday, please post them in the gallery. (Otherwise you're going to end up seeing me all the time, and I'd like to share the spotlight, rather than hog it. )
I had been wondering if Tibet was still around, as I hadn't seen any posts or anything from her in a *very* long time. So, I sent her a message. She apparently had been busy, and forgot all about us. I guess she decided she was going to continue to be too busy to deal with tribe, because the next thing I know, she's made me the Moderator! (I didn't ask to be, really! ) But I don't mind.

Anyway, I figured I'd mention it to everyone, just in case anyone thought they'd missed something.

If it's urgent, you can send a message to my mom-*SilverUnicorn* ) Also, if I seem to miss your pup at some point, please feel free to mention it to me *nicely*. I plan to go from oldest to newest. If there are multiple pics. of the same doggie, I might skip over 1 or 2, so please don't get mad.
I had NO idea that dogs even got Lyme's disease. When I asked them to test my cat, they said cat's don't get it! If you've never had your dog tested and you live in an area with deer, you should. If I had known about this sooner, we might have had another 4 or so good years with Sammi.

There is a vaccine, but our vet told us that they stopped using it when tests indicated that the vaccine likely causes kidney failure. Sigh.

She's perhaps only 4 years old and one of the gentlest dogs you could ever know. She's been limping on her left paw for a few weeks now and after two visits to two different veterinarians and tonight, an x-ray, showing a gap in the main femur part of the bone where it has been eaten away... All that is left now is for them to determine if it has spread to her lungs—the worst case scenario, or to begin chemotherapy. Does anyone have experience in caring for a dog that has gone through a similar situation?

Three weeks ago my husband and I just had our first child (a beautiful boy, a real precious gift) and I'm still healing from the surgery, and now my poor dog has to go through this. I don't know how I'll cope. Please send positive vibes, prayers and good thoughts our way if you can. I'm sure Dulcie would thank you herself if she could type.
I made a small $$ donation for the Pets in the states where Katrina hit, but me and a friend came up with an idea. We called and emailed everyone we know in Philadelphia area, and asked them to drop off any and all pet supplies they can spear. We have like 5 big boxes ready to go. And huge almost new Dog Crate. We have dog food, blankets, pet meads, leashes, even kitty litter and much more. One of my friends has a SUV, it will all fit in there (I hope) we have so much stuff, the response has been overwhelming, and it’s only been like 4-5 days since we “send the word out”. My basement is filling up fast My friend with the SUV is willing to drive as far as 2 hours away from Philly to find a drop off point. Please, does anyone know of any place within 2 hours pf Philly where we can drop off all these pet supplies, and be SURE that they get to the states that got Hit by Katrina.
Also suggestion, maybe you can try the same in your city, call everyone you know ask for even one can of dog food. Don’t take “no” for an answer.
But before u do that, learn from our mistake! Find a drop off point first !
Please anyone with any inf. I want to get this stuff to these pets in need ASAP.
I open to any suggestions.
P.S. I just got a call from a friend who’s in National Guard Reserve, he has just been sent over there, he says they haven’t even got to the places that got hit the most, yet. And he says it’s much worse than we realize.
Guys I need to get the pet supplies down there, please help Any ideas? They are sitting in my basemen, collecting duct:(
Please anyone, how do I get the supplies to these poor pets.???

I think she's more a mix between a cat (she streches like a cat), a tongue (she licks very much), a rabbit (she jumps around like crazy sometimes), a horse (sometimes she snorts like one) and a Bordercollie (she loves to jump over fences and herds the sheep. So I guess she's a typical mutt.

I went shopping saturday night and because of my poor spanish language skills got much mor steaks than I wanted (I was too embarassed to give the package back when it was handed to me). Soooo. After stuffing myself with steak tonight I decided to give my dog a treat. Since I am unsure of the quality of meat I fried the remaining meat in a pan and gave it to Jessie. Well, if she hadn't have her ears I think she would have smiled in cicle. Never saw a more happier dog. I was always against cooking for the dog, thought that dogfood is good enough and everything else is streching it a little bit. But now I wonder.

A man who tried to shoot seven puppies was shot himself when one of the dogs put its paw on the revolver's trigger.

Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, was charged with felony animal cruelty, the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday. He was being treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to his wrist.

Bradford said he decided to shoot the 3-month-old shepherd-mix dogs in the head because he couldn't find them a home, according to the sheriff's office.

On Monday, Bradford was holding two puppies -- one in his arms and another in his left hand -- when the dog in his hand wiggled and put its paw on the trigger of the .38-caliber revolver. The gun then discharged, the sheriff's report said.

Deputies found three of the puppies in a shallow grave outside Bradford's home, said sheriff's Sgt. Ted Roy.

The other four appeared to be in good health and were taken by Escambia County Animal Control, which planned to make them available for adoption.

The wind was in my hair, the smell of gras and bunnies in my nose. It was great. Sadly my mommy doesn't always have time to go out running with me. I don't understand why, but that's what she keeps telling me.

So what did you do today, yesterday....?

What a wonderful way to focus an active dog's energy, make new dog & dogpeople friends, and get some exercise!! Just because you don't have a Border Collie doesn't mean you can't do this for fun. Our class has seen fox terriers, shelties (of course), spaniels, Goldens, and many fun mutt mixes (like mine). I'm in Indiana, btw. I don't what the Dog Scene is like on the West Coast.

I used to say," Ones that needed a home," but they just sort of gave me baffled looks. I find it much more entertaining to make up new "breed" names.

For instance, I have a couple of Tasmanian Bonjos, a Macedonian Pointer, and a Chocolate Colet (co-lay; it's French).
I found a dog on the side of the road last Thursday night. I sat with this dog for over 2 hours waiting for the "authorities" to take it to the emergency vet. It is the sweetest dog ever!
Amazingly enough, after being hit by 2 cars, this dog did not have any broken bones or internal injuries!! The dog has been transfered to the Oakland Animal Shelter and is essentially on death row now. I have until Dec 3rd to find it a home.
He is a reddish Pit Bull and has a great disposition. Even though he was stunned and hurt he let me and others pet him and rub him and check his body to check his injuries. He is medium build (a little scrawny, but you can change that I'm sure).
